Mercy Circle

Mercy Circle:  Hospitality to the Bereaved

“Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.”  Matthew 5:4

Who are We?

The Mercy Circle was begun in the early 1990’s as a hospitality ministry for the family and friends of those who have died.  The ministry offers a simple luncheon following the funeral mass in our beautiful St. Anne’s Parish Hall.  All food and set-up are donated by volunteer ministers in the parish who live out the Corporal Works of Mercy.  There is no charge for this ministry.  Donations are gratefully accepted which allows us to continue to offer this service to other families.

Want to schedule a Luncheon?

It is easy to schedule the luncheon.  When planning your loved one’s funeral, the local funeral home directors will offer this service to you.  The funeral director will ask you for the number of people you anticipate will want to stay for the luncheon.  The funeral director will then notify us here at the parish.  We then notify our Mercy Circle co-captains who make the calls to notify the ministers of hospitality.

Is God calling you to join this ministry?

There are a variety of ways to serve.  First, we need those who can prepare and drop off various food items.  The menus for each of the luncheons include various salads, finger sandwiches, and desserts.  Food must usually be dropped off by 10 a.m.

Each luncheon is set-up and served by 2-4 ministers.  In this part of the ministry, one would arrive earlier to get the coffee brewing, set the tables and set up the food table.  During the luncheon the ministers care for the buffet table.  Afterwards they clean-up.

Another way to serve in this ministry is as a co-captain.  Co-captains are notified by the parish office that their circle of ministers is up for an up-coming funeral.  The co-captains then make phone calls to their circle members to line up food and servers for the luncheon.  this is a wonderful way to serve for those who are home-bound.

The parish office often receives notes of thanks from the bereaved families in which they express their deepest thanks.  It is truly a ministry where charity reigns.
