Proclaiming the Word

“We have seen it and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was made visible to us – what we have seen and heard we proclaim now to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us”  (1 John: 2-3)

Being a lector is more than reading scripture, one must be able to proclaim the Word of God from the depths of his or her beliefs.  Only the believer can proclaim the scriptures.

 Who may proclaim the Word?

To be a lector a person must be at least 18 years of age and have been fully initiated into the Roman Catholic Church having received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.  One must be living according to the moral teachings of our faith and attend Holy Mass on a weekly basis.

Lector’s Prayer before Reading

Almighty God,

be with me, your servant,

as I proclaim your word to the assembly.

May my proclamation of the scriptures

Help your word live anew

among this gathering of the body of Christ.

I pray that I will serve you in all that I do.

Grant this through Christ our Lord.
